Below are a few clips and anecdotes from some of my favorite projects. Enjoy!
mortal thoughts
A tremendous amount of research went into this script. It was based on a sensational murder story and my partner and I were dying to get our hands on the transcripts of the trial. So we just walked into the court building and asked if we could see them. The court clerk said, “You must be the new legal assistants.” And we said, “Yes, yes we are.” A short time later we were sitting in front of 3 file carts stacked high with transcripts. The real trick was sneaking them out of the building, so we could copy them.
synchronized swimming
This mockumentary I directed for SNL starring comedy legends Martin Short, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest, was completely improvised. The only thing worked out in advance was the swimming. The hardest part was not laughing during the takes. Siskel & Ebert gave it “two thumbs up” on the live show and I’m proud to say that “Synchronized Swimming,” is still considered one of the best SNL shorts of all time.
they never found her
Both stars had professional commitments, which meant we only had Labor Day weekend to shoot it. But it was the first time I had the chance to direct something I had written and I wasn’t going to pass up that opportunity. Producing an indie film can be tremendously difficult. The secret is to surround yourself with trusted collaborators who support your vision.
